Highlights: Rare location offering roast beef with a large salad bar
I had heard something interesting about this place.
Apparently, there’s a Big Boy restaurant in Waseda that serves roast beef—something you don’t usually find at regular Big Boy locations.
That alone was enough to get me curious.
So, I decided to check it out.

The restaurant is called “Big Boy Dining Waseda.”
I’ve been to Big Boy restaurants a few times before, so I thought I knew what to expect—casual family dining, hamburg steaks, salad bar, that kind of thing.
But this one is slightly different.
The moment you walk in, it feels familiar… but there’s something extra going on.
The salad bar alone is already impressive.
Honestly, it’s kind of dangerous.
You can pile up as much as you want—fresh vegetables, pasta salad, soups… it’s easy to go overboard before the main dish even arrives.

Before trying the roast beef, I ordered the classic “Big Boy Double” hamburger steak.
And yes—it tastes exactly like Big Boy.
Which is not a bad thing at all.
It’s comforting, consistent, and exactly what you expect.
In Japan, chains like this compete with places like “Sawayaka,” so it’s always interesting to see how they hold their ground.
Now, onto the main reason I came here: the roast beef.

なI was debating whether to go for 250g or even 300g.
But I decided to play it safe with 200g—just in case it wasn’t my thing.
And the result?
Well… interesting.
The flavor reminded me of something very familiar.
Like the kind of ham you eat during New Year’s in Japan.
It’s not the aggressive, rich, melt-in-your-mouth style you might expect from famous roast beef places like Lawry’s The Prime Rib in Tokyo (Ebisu or Akasaka).
Instead, it’s milder, more straightforward.
Some people might prefer this lighter taste—it’s easier to eat and not too heavy.
But if you’re expecting something intense or “luxury-level,” you might feel a bit surprised.
That said, when you combine it with the salad bar, the overall experience becomes quite satisfying.
You can balance heavier meat with fresh vegetables, soups, and side dishes.
It turns into more of a “customizable meal experience” rather than just a single dish.
In that sense, it’s actually a fun place to visit.
If you’re traveling in Tokyo and want to try a unique version of a familiar Japanese family restaurant—with a limited menu item you won’t find everywhere—this Big Boy Dining in Waseda is worth checking out.
Just don’t go in expecting high-end roast beef.
Go in expecting something casual, slightly different, and very “local Japan.”
