When looking for a lunch spot in Ginza that offered a proper sashimi platter, I eventually found a restaurant called Ginza Sakanasama.
The name itself is memorable. “Sakanasama” roughly translates to “Mr. Fish” or “Fish-sama,” which already gives seafood lovers a good impression before even stepping inside.
Located on the fifth floor of a building in Ginza’s business district, the restaurant seems to be part of a small chain. From the outside, you might not immediately notice it, but once you step inside, it feels like a comfortable seafood-focused Japanese restaurant catering to both office workers and visitors.


One of the lunch options that caught my attention was the sea bream rice set meal priced at just under ¥3,000.
There are different versions available, including one paired with a sashimi assortment and another focused more traditionally on sea bream rice. What I particularly appreciated was the inclusion of three small side dishes.
Japanese set meals often become memorable because of these small details. In this case, the side dishes added texture and variety to the meal. One had a texture similar to shinjo, a soft fish paste dumpling. Another provided a crunchy contrast. The third resembled salmon roe in appearance but had a flavor closer to salted salmon eggs.
The meal also came with an egg-yolk-based soy sauce. Mixing this with rice creates a rich flavor similar to tamago-kake-gohan (Japanese egg-over-rice), which pairs surprisingly well with the sea bream.

The sashimi assortment was visually appealing and fresh. One thing worth mentioning is that a seafood enthusiast friend recently pointed out that many restaurants have been serving fewer shrimp in their sashimi platters despite promotional photos showing them.
Interestingly, I experienced the same thing here. The platter was enjoyable, but the shrimp shown in some photos was not included during my visit. This is not unusual in Japan, as seafood availability often depends on seasonality and daily market conditions.



Another popular lunch option is the ara-ni, a simmered fish collar and fish head dish.
Online reviews occasionally mention a fishy smell, but I suspect some people may be confusing ara-ni with more refined simmered fish dishes. Ara-ni is traditionally made using fish heads, collars, and bones. The purpose is not elegance but maximizing flavor from parts that contain rich collagen and fat.
For a dish priced in the ¥1,000 range, the portion size was surprisingly generous.
Personally, I noticed that some scales remained on certain pieces. However, completely removing every scale and performing extensive preparation would inevitably increase labor costs and menu prices. From that perspective, the balance between cost and portion size felt understandable.
Some diners may prefer a stronger seasoning. I enjoy bold flavors myself and thought a slightly richer sauce might reduce any concerns about fish aroma. On the other hand, making the seasoning stronger might make it harder to finish such a large serving.
As I kept thinking about it, I found myself wondering whether people who dislike ara-ni might simply prefer a standard simmered fish set meal instead. For those who understand what ara-ni is supposed to be, the dish offers solid value.
An additional bonus is that on weekdays, coffee and tea are available as self-service drinks. Considering the location in Ginza, this makes the lunch experience feel even more worthwhile.
Overall, Ginza Sakanasama is not a luxury seafood restaurant. Instead, it offers a practical and satisfying seafood lunch experience in central Tokyo. If you are exploring Ginza and want sashimi, sea bream rice, and traditional Japanese seafood dishes without paying premium fine-dining prices, this restaurant is worth considering.
