While traveling around Nishi-Izu, I originally had a completely different plan.
I had heard that the nearby Okiagari Shokudo occasionally serves live squid, so that was my destination for the day. Unfortunately, after arriving, I discovered it was closed for its regular holiday.
It happens.
Rather than giving up, I decided to visit a place I had often seen on Instagram: Hanbata Market near Nishi Port in Nishi-Izu.
Sometimes those unexpected detours become the highlight of a trip.

For many visitors, the famous sightseeing area in this part of Shizuoka is Dogashima. I have visited Dogashima many times over the years, but surprisingly, this was my first time stopping by Nishi Port.
Looking back, I probably should have explored the area much sooner.
Hanbata Market is a local seafood market where visitors can purchase freshly landed fish and seafood from the surrounding waters. Compared to major tourist markets, the atmosphere feels more local and relaxed.
One of the things I enjoy when traveling in Japan is finding places that local residents actually use, rather than destinations designed exclusively for tourists. Hanbata Market has exactly that kind of authentic feeling.

The first thing that caught my attention was a fish called Kidai.
The price shocked me.
A whole fish was being sold for around ¥700.
At first, I honestly thought there must be some mistake.
Even more surprising, half portions were available for around ¥500.
Considering the quality and freshness of the fish, the prices felt incredibly low compared with what visitors might expect in larger cities such as Tokyo.
This is one of the advantages of traveling through fishing towns in Japan. Sometimes the seafood is not only fresher but also significantly less expensive than what you would find in urban seafood restaurants.
Another interesting item was squid liver, a delicacy appreciated by seafood enthusiasts.
Japanese seafood culture often focuses on using as much of the fish as possible, including parts that may be unfamiliar to international visitors. For adventurous food lovers, discovering these ingredients can become one of the most memorable parts of a trip.

What impressed me most about Hanbata Market was not just the seafood itself, but the overall sense of value.
Many famous tourist destinations become increasingly commercialized over time. Nishi Port, however, still feels connected to the daily lives of local fishermen and residents.
The market provides an opportunity to experience a more authentic side of coastal Shizuoka.
If you are already planning to visit Dogashima, I highly recommend adding Nishi Port to your itinerary. The distance is short, yet the atmosphere feels completely different.
You may not find luxury dining or elaborate tourist attractions here. Instead, you will discover fresh seafood, reasonable prices, and a glimpse into everyday life along the Izu Peninsula.
Sometimes the places you never planned to visit become the places you remember most.
Hanbata Market was exactly that kind of discovery for me.
