If you’re looking for an affordable seafood lunch in Shinjuku, I recently revisited Torobocchi, a tuna and shellfish specialty restaurant directly operated by a seafood wholesaler.
This wasn’t my first visit. In fact, I’ve been here several times before, always ordering some of their higher-priced tuna bowls. This time, however, I finally decided to try their cheapest lunch option—the 1,000 yen daily tuna bowl.

It was a rainy day, and surprisingly there was no line even at around 12:30 PM. The next day, when I walked past the restaurant again, there was a long queue as usual. If you’re planning to visit, rainy days might be your best chance to get a seat without waiting.
When the bowl arrived, my first impression was simple: “This is the 1,000 yen bowl?”
I had seen other customers ordering it before, but seeing it up close again reminded me how generous the portion is. Honestly, at first glance it’s difficult to tell the difference between the 1,000 yen bowl and the more expensive 2,000 or 3,000 yen options.

One thing I particularly like is that the restaurant provides dashi broth for changing the flavor, similar to the way hitsumabushi is enjoyed. Since this broth is included regardless of which tuna bowl you order, the cheapest option feels surprisingly complete.
The main difference is the quality and richness of the tuna. The more expensive bowls contain a higher proportion of fatty tuna cuts, creating a richer and more luxurious experience.
However, the 1,000 yen daily bowl still includes fatty tuna pieces. For visitors who prefer a lighter and cleaner taste rather than extremely rich tuna, this may actually be the better choice.
I suspect the daily selection includes species such as bigeye tuna or yellowfin tuna depending on availability. Either way, the flavor remains fresh and satisfying without feeling overly heavy.

I also ordered the large size, although it didn’t feel significantly larger than what I remembered from a previous visit. Perhaps the serving style varies slightly depending on the day. Regardless, the portion was more than enough to leave me completely satisfied.
The only minor downside is that everything revolves around tuna. If you visit repeatedly, you may eventually crave a bit more variety.
That said, considering the price, the value is exceptional. Every time I visit, I find myself wondering how they can offer this quality for only 1,000 yen.
For travelers exploring Shinjuku and searching for a budget-friendly seafood lunch, Torobocchi is an easy recommendation. Whether you’re a tuna enthusiast or simply want to experience a popular local lunch spot without spending too much, this restaurant delivers excellent value.
And one final tip: the colorful negitoro portions make a surprisingly photogenic shot. Arrange three of them together and you’ll have a great social media photo before you start eating.
