I didn’t expect to come back here so soon.
But somehow, I found myself once again standing in front of this famous saba rice restaurant in Suidobashi.
The place is called “Saba Meshi no Sabasho,” and if you’ve ever looked up local food spots in Tokyo, chances are you’ve seen it pop up.


The last time I came here was at night, and it didn’t feel that crowded. But this time, I came during lunch hours—and wow, completely different story.
A long line.
Like, really long.
At first, I hesitated. But honestly, waiting in line is kind of part of the experience in Japan. So I decided to join in.
Quick tip: you have to buy your meal ticket first before lining up. If you don’t notice and go stand in line, you’ll either have to awkwardly leave the line or start over again. Not fun.
After about 30 minutes, I finally got inside.
The turnover is actually pretty fast—probably similar to a ramen shop. Since it’s mainly rice bowls, people eat and leave fairly quickly.

I noticed something interesting compared to my previous visit.
The “extra rice refill” (called oikomeshi) used to be free, but now it costs extra. Not a big deal, but worth knowing.
Now, let’s talk about the food.

Grilled saba (mackerel), served over rice, with a rich, slightly sweet sauce.
Simple concept—but done really well.
These days, many places in Japan serve this style where you finish your meal like “hitsumabushi.” You start by eating it as is, then gradually change the way you eat it—sometimes adding broth or condiments.
It’s a fun, interactive way to enjoy a dish.
To be honest, I was thinking: “Couldn’t I make this at home?”
After all, it’s basically grilled fish with sauce over rice.
But then again… that crispy texture.
That’s the tricky part.
Getting that perfect balance between crispy skin and juicy inside is not as easy as it sounds.
Also, there’s something about the seasoning—maybe it’s the yuzu powder? That subtle citrus aroma adds a nice twist.
I kept trying to figure out what exactly makes it so satisfying.
In the end, I just accepted it: it’s delicious.
For just a little over 1,000 yen, this is a very solid meal in Tokyo.
It’s the kind of place you wish existed near your home.
If you’re visiting Tokyo and want to try a local favorite with a bit of a line—but still affordable and worth it—this is definitely a spot to check out.
