I had been curious about this place for a while.

Trattoria Gran Bocca in Iidabashi is known as one of those “always busy” restaurants in Tokyo. You know the type—people talk about it, Instagram is full of it, and somehow there’s always a line.

So I thought: maybe the hype has calmed down by now?

Nope.

Still packed.

The restaurant is located on the second floor of a building right in front of Iidabashi Station, inside Sakura Terrace.

When I arrived, I found out that all table seats were already fully booked for the day.

Apparently, lunch ends around 2:30 PM, so if you wait and no seats open up, you simply won’t get in.

That’s… slightly terrifying.

Luckily, I managed to get a counter seat this time. It was actually my first time visiting during lunch.

And the atmosphere? Completely different from dinner.

During lunch, it feels like a gathering spot for local ladies—very relaxed, chatty, almost like a café vibe.

Most people come with reservations, so you don’t really see office workers here. Honestly, if you tried to line up during a lunch break, you’d probably never make it back to work on time.

Now, the main reason many people come here: popovers.

If you don’t know what popovers are, they’re light, hollow bread rolls with a crispy outside and soft, airy inside.

At first, I thought: “Unlimited? I can probably eat a lot.”

But once you actually try them…

You realize quickly.

These are not something you can eat endlessly.

Each one is surprisingly large.

The classic way is to eat them with maple syrup and whipped butter, which is definitely delicious.

But personally, I found a better way.

Using the sauce from the appetizer, adding some vegetables, and turning it into a mini sandwich.

That combination worked really well.

The texture is slightly chewy, slightly fluffy—very satisfying.

Compared to some places that just serve simple dried pasta for lunch, this feels like a much better deal.

For around 2,000 yen, you get a full experience.

Also, if you’re planning to eat multiple popovers, you can ask for extra butter—so yes, you can go all-in on the calories if you want.

Overall, this place is not just about eating.

It’s about enjoying the experience—slow lunch, good bread, and a relaxed atmosphere.

If you’re visiting Tokyo and looking for a stylish yet casual Italian lunch spot with something a little different, this is definitely worth trying.

Just… make a reservation.

Seriously.
